Team Mechanics
Part IX: Gameplay Mechanics
Overview
Team mechanics translate the narrative theme — neurodiversity as strength — into gameplay. Characters' abilities combine, complement, and amplify each other. No single character is sufficient; the team is greater than its parts.
Synergy System
How Synergies Work
- When two characters act in coordinated sequence, synergy bonus activates
- Synergies discovered through play (not listed in menu until first use)
- Each pairing has unique synergy reflecting their relationship
Key Synergies
Vibrion + Eli (Energy Rush):
- Vibrion charges; Eli channels speed through energy field
- Effect: Devastating combined attack; area-clearing
- Relationship: Natural camaraderie amplifies
Anne + Maya (Strategic Pattern):
- Anne predicts; Maya confirms sequence
- Effect: Perfect navigation through complex hazards
- Relationship: Complementary thinking (anticipation + structure)
Leo + Iris (Deep Vision):
- Leo's analysis + Iris's perception
- Effect: Reveal hidden content at deeper level than either alone
- Relationship: Intellectual curiosity meets multi-reality
Dave + Eli (Grounded Speed):
- Dave's empathy buffs; Eli's speed
- Effect: Eli with emotional awareness (doesn't crash; reads room)
- Relationship: Opposite energies balancing
Dave + Iris (Empathic Vision):
- Dave senses emotion; Iris sees layers
- Effect: Emotional truth across reality layers (deepest reading possible)
- Relationship: Both see what others miss
Anne + Vibrion (Tactical Command):
- Anne plans; Vibrion executes with precision
- Effect: Optimized team deployment; best outcomes
- Relationship: Deputy + leader
Maya + Leo (Pattern Analysis):
- Maya finds pattern; Leo analyzes meaning
- Effect: Solve previously impossible puzzles
- Relationship: Different but complementary analytical styles
Team Coordination Challenges
Multi-Character Puzzles
- Player assigns characters to positions/roles
- Each character performs their part in sequence
- Timing matters (temporal coordination)
- Failure: retry with different assignment or timing
Communication System
- Characters call out observations (automated; character voice)
- Player receives info filtered through current character's perception
- Switching characters mid-challenge provides different info
Character Switching Strategy
When to Switch
- Obstacle requires different ability
- Current character overwhelmed (environmental stress)
- Synergy opportunity available
- Better perception needed for current situation
Switching Cost
- Brief transition moment (1-2 seconds; not instantaneous)
- Cannot switch during active ability use
- Some zones restrict switching (narrative)
Team Roles in Combat
| Role | Primary | Secondary |
|---|---|---|
| Tank/DPS | Vibrion | Eli |
| Speedster/DPS | Eli | Vibrion |
| Support/Healer | Dave | — |
| Strategist | Anne | Maya |
| Scout/Perception | Iris | Leo |
| Analyst | Leo | Maya |
| Navigator | Maya | Anne |
Relationship Mechanics
Relationship Level
- Deepens through: missions together, dialogue choices, synergy use
- Higher relationship = stronger synergy bonuses
- Maximum relationship unlocks unique combined ability
Team Morale
- Affected by: mission outcomes, Dr. Mental sessions, rest, story events
- High morale: ability bonuses; better coordination
- Low morale: reduced effectiveness; character-specific debuffs
